Held annually, the Lamu Cultural Festival is a celebration of Swahili heritage that turns the entire old town into a stage — donkey races down the waterfront, traditional dhow sailing competitions, and Swahili poetry recitals that draw performers from across the coast.
What Happens During the Festival
- Dhow Race — local sailors compete along the channel in traditional wooden dhows, no engines allowed.
- Donkey Race — a genuinely chaotic, crowd-favorite event through the old town's narrow lanes.
- Swahili Poetry (Mashairi) — recitals in a centuries-old verse tradition, often touching on love, faith, and coastal identity.
- Henna and Craft Stalls — set up along the waterfront through the festival week.
Best Way to Experience It
Book accommodation in Lamu Old Town itself, not Shela, if you want to be within walking distance of the evening events — the town fills up and taxis (or rather, donkeys) get scarce.
Planning Around It
The festival typically runs in November; exact dates shift year to year, so confirm before booking flights. It's also the busiest week Lamu sees all year, so accommodation should be locked in well in advance.
