Diani Beach Festival Season: A Local's Calendar

From kite-surfing competitions to full-moon beach parties, here is when Diani actually comes alive.

Diani has a rhythm most visitors miss on a short trip — a run of events from July through September that turns the beach town from laid-back to genuinely lively.

July: Kite-Surfing Season Opens

Diani's steady southeast winds pick up in July, drawing kite-surfers from across the region. Several schools run beginner clinics timed to the season opening — a good window to learn if you've been putting it off.

August: Mombasa Carnival (Regional)

A short drive north, Mombasa's carnival season brings parades and street performances that many Diani visitors combine with a day trip.

Full Moon Parties

Several beach bars along Diani run informal full-moon gatherings monthly — live drumming, bonfires, and the kind of night that doesn't show up on any official events calendar. Ask locally; timing shifts with the tide charts.

Planning Tip

If you want the lively version of Diani, July through September is your window. For the quieter, empty-beach version, aim for the shoulder months either side.
