From Beach to Bush: Combining Coast and Safari
Tsavo East sits closer to the coast than most travelers realize. Here is how to build one trip that does both properly.

One of the most common questions we get is whether it's realistic to combine a coastal stay with a proper safari without the trip feeling rushed. The short answer: yes, if you sequence it right.
Why Tsavo East Works
Tsavo East is roughly a 2.5-hour drive or 45-minute flight from Diani or Mombasa, making it the most practical pairing for a coast-and-bush itinerary without burning a full travel day.
Our Recommended Sequence
Start with safari, end with coast — not the other way around. Three nights in Tsavo East followed by four nights unwinding in Diani or Watamu lets the trip build toward rest rather than away from it.
What You'll See in Tsavo East
- The park's red-earth elephants, stained by the local soil, are genuinely distinct from elephants elsewhere in Kenya.
- Mudanda Rock offers a natural game-viewing platform overlooking a waterhole without needing a vehicle at all.
- Lugard Falls, where the Galana River forces itself through a narrow rock gorge.
Logistics We Handle
Charter flights between Tsavo and the coast, park permits, and vehicle transfers are all things we book as a single itinerary — no need to coordinate separate safari and beach operators yourself.
